Neurobiology is the biology of the nervous system. Students in this minor will learn about neurobiological processes in animals and humans.
This minor is an excellent option if you are planning to pursue advanced study in a field related to neurobiology or neuroscience—whether it’s cognitive, behavioral, developmental, computational, or molecular—or if you are seeking training for a job related to the assessment, rehabilitation, or treatment of traumatic brain injury, brain diseases, or addiction. This minor is also a good option for psychology majors or other preprofessional health majors.

This minor is an excellent option for students who are (i) planning to pursue advanced study in any of several fields related to neurobiology or neuroscience whether it be cognitive, behavioral, developmental, computational, molecular; or (ii) seeking relevant training for jobs related to the assessment, rehabilitation, and treatment of traumatic brain injury, brain diseases, and addiction. Additionally, this minor could also be attractive to psychology or other (Pre-) health majors.
Classes and Requirements
This minor is not just for biology majors. If you’re in a related field, such as psychology, natural science, or health- or exercise-related studies, you may want to consider it.
The curriculum provides students with basic knowledge, including laboratory skills, in human physiology (BIOL 104 Human Biology: How the Body Works or BIOL 240 Human Physiology) before students go on to study neurobiology (in BIOL 477) at the molecular, cellular, systems, and cognitive levels.
The diversity of controlled electives available through biology course offerings and through programs in philosophy (PHIL 360 Philosophy of Mind and PHIL 390 Philosophy of Human Nature) and in psychology (PSYC 225 Abnormal Psychology and PSYC 372 Drugs and Behavior) allows students to choose and sharpen their interests in this expansive field.
