This is part of #EberlyAmazingStudents, a series from the IUP Eberly College of Business and Information Technology that focuses on students who are working and/or involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities.
Tyra McGarvie is a senior at IUP majoring in marketing in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology. She is from Franklin, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, and attended Franklin Senior High School. Tyra first discovered IUP by looking for the top business schools in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and saw that Eberly was AACSB accredited. As soon as she toured the IUP campus she knew that it was her new home away from home, and Eberly was somewhere that she knew she could grow and become successful someday.
She is very active in the business school, as well as across IUP's campus. Ever since her freshman year she has been a part of multiple organizations and has held different leadership roles. Tyra is a member of the Senior Honors Business Cohort, vice president ofTri Sigma Lambda sorority, president of the American Marketing Association, a member of the College of Business Student Advisory Council, and a member of the Eberly Digital Marketing Team.
She explained, "Eberly has given me so many opportunities and great experiences in the three short years I've been here. Being in the Business Honors Program has given me the chance to network and connect with multiple successful alumni and alumna. Ever since my freshmen year, I've been able to visit notable businesses and make connections in Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, and even India."
Tyra has interned at a few places since her freshmen year. She was a marketing and communications intern at the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, where she learned more about digital marketing and the importance of business networking in communities. While at the chamber, Tyra completed many projects like a business directory with 800+ businesses and the Chamber's Annual Luncheon. She completed another internship this past summer at the National Association of Convenience Stores, located in Alexandria, Virginia. There, Tyra worked as the marketing intern and helped spearhead social media campaigns that reached consumers across the US and even international audiences.
Tyra plans to work in either digital marketing or branding after she graduates. She knows that Eberly has given her great tools like communication and leadership skills to succeed in the future. Eberly has also taught her to be open to new learning experiences and take every opportunity possible to grow.
"I'm so grateful for everything I've learned at IUP, and I know that I'll be able to use all of the amazing knowledge from Eberly to grow and achieve my career goals in the future. I now know that you must work hard to get what you want, and you must keep pushing even after a few bumps in the road. Eberly has taught me that success isn't easy, but at the end of the day you'll appreciate every bump it took you to get there," Tyra explained.
