September 10: Introduction to Research on Westlaw
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit]
This course will introduce new users to how to find a document and print it, if you know the title or citation. It will also show basics of plain language researching and touch lightly on terms and connectors. We will also talk about how to find some of your "book" resources online.
September 14: Intermediate Research on Westlaw
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit]
This course will pick up where the Introduction course left off. We will go more in-depth into searching in both plain language and terms and connectors, and learn about tools including "copy with reference," annotations, foldering, research recommendations, history and more.
September 15: Legal Ethics - at 5:30 p.m.
[1 hour, 1 ethics credit]
This ethics course focuses on Comment 8 to Rule 1.1, Maintaining Competence including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology. We will be surveying new technology, including some of the tools on Westlaw Edge, West KM, HighQ and Caselines.
October 2: Advanced Legal Research on Westlaw
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit].
This course will pick up where the Intermediate course left off. We will discuss using the West Editorial Enhancements, Topic and Key Numbers, Terms and Connectors, Field Searching, and more.
October 16: Enhance Your Legal Research Proficiency with Edge
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit].
This course goes over in detail the state-of-the-art research tools built into Edge and shows you how you would find the same information if you did not have Edge.
October 26: Legal Ethics
[1 hour, 1 ethics credit].
This ethics course focuses on Comment 8 to Rule 1.1, Maintaining Competence including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology. We will be surveying new technology, including some of the tools on Westlaw Edge, West KM, HighQ and Caselines.
November 2: Litigation Research with Westlaw
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit].
This course focuses beyond statutes and case law on pleadings, motions, memoranda, briefs, trial court orders, and analyzing a judge's or opposing counsel's research style.
November 20:Public Records
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit].
This course focuses on finding individual public records, knowing what a public records database covers, and using aggregators around people and businesses. We will also search news databases. If there is time, we may also look at the public records on CLEAR.
December 4: Statutes and Legislative History
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit].
This course will start simply with finding statutes by citation and topic, understanding the information in the tabs with a statute, when and how to use the Notes of Decisions as opposed to the citing references. We will discuss how to compare a statue to prior versions, how to find the statute as it stood on a specific day, where to find the "book" tools like the Popular Name Table, the Index, the Table of Contents. It will also include information on doing legislative history research at the federal and state levels.
December 14: Topical Research [Legal Services Topics]
[1 hour, 1 substantive credit]
Basic to intermediate research level, focusing on topics legal services attorneys face frequently, including evictions, mortgage foreclosures, and unemployment claims.
