If you like Rom-com and beautiful tunes, come to see this one-act opera, Gianni Schicchi (If you have difficulties pronouncing the title, you are not alone! It is approximately pronounced as “Johnny skee-skee”).
Gianni Schicchi can be considered as one of the precursors of all Rom-Com shows. The female protagonist’s aria “O mio babbino caro” (My dear pappa) was featured in numerous movies (Pixar’s “Luca,” “Room with a View,” and Rom-com “No Reservations”), and is a popular choice for many talent competition shows.
Gianni Schicchi, composed by Puccini, is an hour long Italian opera written for the US audience and was premiered in New York in 1918. One fun fact is that the infamous musical “Rent” was based on Puccini’s earlier opera “La bohème.”
This is the first Puccini opera performed at IUP; the audience will surely enjoy this Rom-com and the beautiful tunes. Come and support our talented IUP students! Sung in English and directed by Oliver Lo and Evan Engelstad.
Fisher Auditorium has a large seat capacity; the audience could sit wherever they feel comfortable. And since the opera is short, it will be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Masks are required. For questions, please contact Oliver Lo (slo@iup.edu).
