The IUP Department of Music held its first Summer Music Camp June 26–July 2, 2022. More than 50 seventh- through 12th-grade student musicians participated in the week-long camp.
The IUP Summer Music Camp was open to musicians on any instrument or voice. Campers were able to perform in numerous ensembles, including Choir, Orchestra, Hybrid (combined band and string instruments), Brass, Low Brass, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Vocal Jazz, Music Theater, and Rock. Students also participated in elective classes, including Conducting, Digital Music Composition, and Leadership. Each student received a one-on-one lesson with an IUP faculty member or upperclassman student.
IUP faculty members Rosemary Engelstad, Craig Denison, Alex Dee, and Zach Collins planned the event throughout the 2021–22 school year and served as the lead coordinators during the camp. Many Department of Music faculty volunteered their time to teach lessons and classes: Joseph Baunoch, Evan Engelstad, David Ferguson, Laura Ferguson, Jim Flowers, Linda Jennings, John Levey, Oliver Lo, Gabby Swackhamer (alumnus), Therese Wacker, and Jason Worzbyt. Current IUP students served as counselors: Alex Detwiler, David Earnest, Cynthia Hayhurst, Kayla Holsopple, Laura Hopf, John Makara, Matthew Mantini, Ivy McComsey, Dylan Opalinski, Leo Prezioso, and Sam Shelenberger.
The camp concluded with two concerts, one on Friday evening and one on Saturday morning with the families of campers in attendance. Faculty and students are already starting to plan for next year's camp.
