Dr. Ken Coles, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø professor of geoscience, will present a free program in the IUP planetarium on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. titled “New Eyes: Gamma-Ray and X-Ray Astronomy.”

The program will focus on kinds of light that cannot be observed until examined outside the Earth's atmosphere.

The IUP planetarium is located on the first floor of Weyandt Hall, on the east side of the Oak Grove next to Oakland Avenue.

Seating is limited; doors will open 15 minutes before each show. For more information or to arrange for groups, call (724) 357-5626 or e-mail Coles at kcoles@iup.edu.

The programs are sponsored by the geoscience department and the IUP College of Natural Science and Mathematics. All programs are free and open to the community.

Two additional programs are planned for spring. On March 23 at 7 p.m., Coles will present “400 Years of the Telescope.” He will discuss Galileo Galilei's first use of a telescope in 1609 and the impact it made on science and society. Viewing of the night sky with classic telescopes will follow the program, weather permitting.

The national quadricentennial of the telescope will be celebrated on April 2, 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the lawn west of the Hadley Union Building parking lot, next to Keith Hall.
