ϳԹ has created a new scholarship to assist current IUP students in funding overseas educational experiences planned from summer 2009 through spring 2010.

The International Education Scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate students who are participating in IUP-approved overseas programs.

Funding is available for both program costs and additional costs associated with overseas educational experiences, including travel, passports or visas.

“To be successful citizens and leaders in their careers, our students must be prepared to function effectively in a global community with diverse cultures and ideologies,” President Dr. Tony Atwater said. “In many cases, students have a desire to study abroad but lack adequate financial support. This scholarship initiative will address that need.”

To qualify, students must have completed a minimum of 24 IUP undergraduate credits and have a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. Applicants must demonstrate self-reliance, maturity and flexibility to deal with the challenges and opportunities associated with overseas programs.

Preference will be given to first-generation university students, students who have financial need and students who have no overseas experience.

The deadline for applying for summer and fall 2009 study abroad scholarships is April 1. Deadline for spring study abroad scholarships is Oct. 15. More information about the scholarship is available from the Office of International Education.

More than 300 IUP students participate in study abroad opportunities annually, including exchanges, study abroad, faculty-led programs and independently arranged programs. Exchange programs are offered in more than 60 countries. In addition, IUP welcomes more than 700 international students from 75 different countries each year.
