After earning his bachelor’s degree, Chris Schaney wasn’t done learning. He went to graduate school and landed in the world of geographic information systems, where he built a career sharing his knowledge and passion with students as a member of the Department of Anthropology, Geospatial, and Earth Sciences. Learn more about him in this week’s installment of Meet Our Faculty.
What is it about the geography field that initially drew you in—and ultimately keeps you interested?
After earning my undergraduate degree, I wanted to expand my career opportunities by learning and using geographical information systems. I didn’t have previous experience in geography, but halfway through my first semester of graduate studies, I was hooked on geography.
Geography keeps me interested because of the generalist nature of the discipline. As my interests change over time, geographic traditions can easily be applied to any number of areas of research.
I also enjoy the changing geotechnical aspects of the field with advancements in geographic information systems and science, remote sensing, and uncrewed aerial vehicles (drones).
Why do you enjoy teaching in this discipline?
The course I most enjoy teaching is Conservation: Environmental Analysis. I enjoy teaching the history of conservation in the United States and its continued need as natural resource extraction continues and increases to meet the demands of a growing population. I enjoy engaging students in aspects of emerging green technologies. I also enjoy encouraging them to learn and take advantage of field experiences to broaden their horizons and learn about contemporary conservation efforts.
What advice would you give students about how to succeed in college?
Get to know your professors. Be interested and engaged in the college experience. Take advantage of the many opportunities available at the university within your program and across the university.
Tell us something most of your students may not know about you.
I love to travel on a motorcycle and enjoy yearly long adventure trips to interesting places throughout Appalachia and Canada. I play bass guitar in several bands and am always surprised at the interesting places my bass takes me. I am the father to a wonderful 8-year-old daughter who inspires me to be a positive and inner explorer.
