While I wish this communication would be filled with the traditional welcome and congratulatory messages about jobs well done during move-in and Welcome Weekend, I need to talk with you in a different way right now.
We have experienced several extremely challenging and tragic events over the past several days. I share your sadness and shock. I am concerned for you, for your families, and for our community. We have much to sort through as we try to figure out the best ways to deal with what we are feeling right now and how we move forward from here.
That said, I am encouraged by what I am hearing and seeing from you, especially on social media. I am seeing an overwhelming message of support for one another and a commitment to this university as a community whose members care for one another. Thank you for stepping up. Please continue to do so. Watch out for each other, and take good care of yourself. We heard this during convocation, and it is good advice: Take chances and experience new things, but be safe.
I want to emphasize this point above all: We are here to help you. You are not alone. If you are hurting or confused, talk to us, and talk to each other.
Thank you for being part of this university community. I wish you all a successful semester.
