Dear IUP Students,
As you know from our messaging last week, we are continuing the investigation of the incident at Jane Leonard Hall on Thursday.
While the individuals responsible for the messaging told University Police that they did not intend it as a threat to any individual or group, we understand the worry and anxiety that this incident has caused you and your families.
We also hear your questions and concerns about if the university is responding to this incident with the seriousness that it deserves.
Please know this: Appropriately addressing every possible threat to campus safety is our priority.
In the case of an incident like the one last week, we rely on University Police and their investigative skills and experience to make the determination of the level of threat to the community. This was the process that we followed on Thursday.
While the determination was made that this incident was not a threat to you, we do not minimize your anxiety, fear, and uncertainty when incidents like this happen. We are here to help you through these feelings and concerns.
During the week, the IUP Counseling Center is available by calling 724- 357-2621 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk-in hours at the Center are Monday through Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. You can also contact your Navigator or a member of IUP’s Care Team of professionals. The Care Team works together to offer appropriate support to students in distress.
If you need to talk, I would also encourage you to take advantage of programs like Project Connect a low-key, no-pressure small group event, offered in Stabley Library Lobby and at North Dining Hall during the lunch and dinner hours. Please click on the link for details.
If you have an immediate need for mental health support after traditional business hours, you can call 9-1-1 or the Indiana/Armstrong Mental Health Crisis line 1-877-333-2470 for help (the Crisis line is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week).
If you need us, please reach out to us. I also ask that you please continue to help one another by sharing these available resources with friends or classmates who come to you with concerns.
Respectfully,
Dr. Segar
