Artist Bio:

Katy DeMent majored in art history and psychology at Georgia State University, with additional studies in textiles at American College in Atlanta. She is a working studio artist, organic gardener, and beekeeper who creates her art from plants and recycled treasures. Each piece is a vignette that tells a story with layers of vintage ephemera, photos, and bits of cloth interacting with etched images, small toys, natural objects, and beads. Her work is found in galleries and museums worldwide and has been featured on HGTV's Crafters Coast to Coast.

Also an active teaching artist, DeMent has presented residencies through Pittsburgh Filmmakers/ Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, ArtsPath, Gateway to the Arts, Young Audiences of New York, and the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse.

She was awarded the 2005 Art Educator of the Year by the Georgia Art Educators Association and Best in Show at the 2007 Atlanta Downtown Festival and Tour, and can now be found exhibiting in galleries across Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina.

In January of 2017, DeMent received her Teaching Artist Certification from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia after completing their year-and-a-half long program that develops an artists' knowledge of educational methods, and proficiency in the design, implementation, and management of artist residencies.

The online course included Foundations of Learning Theory, Human Behavior and Child Development, methods for Teaching Artists, Professional Practices, and a Capstone Residency Project incorporating learning throughout the program.
