What is Take Back the Night?

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Haven Project and the IUP and Indiana communities take part in Take Back the Night.

#IUPTBTN2024 #ShatterTheSilence

TBTN is an annual event to bring awareness to sexual violence and support those impacted by violence. TBTN is a global event that many colleges and universities participate in. A traditional TBTN event includes a march, rally, protest, and a speak-out.

In many situations, violence occurs at night, and as a result, many people stay home out of fear. Every spring, the Haven Project coordinates its largest event with a gathering of over a thousand people, including students, staff, faculty, and Indiana residents. Participants, often carrying anti-violence signs and chanting anti-violence and empowerment messages, march through the IUP campus.

This march is held in an effort to end violence and send the message that victims and survivors will no longer remain fearful and secluded in their homes.

IUP's Take Back the Night March is followed by a powerful survivor speak-out, which offers survivors of violence an opportunity to give voice to their experiences. Some share their stories, or provide support to others, while publicly affirming their transition from victim to survivor. It is a powerful and empowering event for both survivors and supporters. The speak-out is an inseparable and vital part of IUP's experience of Take Back the Night and brings awareness to others about the impact of sexual assault and violence on victims and survivors.

Virtual Speak Out 2022: IUP Haven Project

Content warning: This video contains stories of sexual assaults that may be triggering. Please be aware before viewing.

This IUP virtual speak out is filled with anonymous survivor stories read by the IUP Haven Project about sexual assault for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This is in place of the 2022 Take Back the Night March and Speak Out. The stories shared were not created by Haven—they are just giving a voice to the stories so the writers can remain anonymous. Viewers will learn about the Haven Project and resources for assistance and support, and will hear stories to help support victims and survivors of sexual assault.
