Jack s family have established the Conrad J. Gates Memorial Scholarship for Industrial Relations in the Foundation for IUP and suggested contributions to that fund in his memory from family, friends, alumni, and friends of the department. Born July 16, 1931, in Buffalo, N.Y., Jack was a son of the late Homer and Emily Christine Machemer Gates. He was a member of St. Bruno Church, South Greensburg, and had served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Cornell University and Buffalo University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He was admitted to practice in the state courts of New York and ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and in the Federal District Court of the United States. He also had a private law practice in Monroeville and was a labor arbitrator.

Dr. Gates was a member of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Bar Association, Westmoreland County Bar Association, Industrial Relations Research Association (Western Pa. chapter), Association of Pa. State College and University Faculties, and the Pittsburgh Personnel Association. He was also a former department chair of business administration at St. Vincent College.
