Identifying and linking historical paradigm shifts originated by entrepreneurial innovations in food, beverage, and lodging delivery systems to its enduring evolutionary effect upon contemporary hospitality business models.

- Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE) Member since 1989
- Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Education (ACPHA). Dr. Shiring volunteers as a subject specialist for ACPHA serving as an on-site evaluator for hospitality and tourism management programs seeking accreditation since 2006.

- Pittsburgh Club Managers Foundation (PCMF)
- Since the PCMF founding in June 2017, the Foundation members have worked closely with Dr. Shiring to provide networking and educational opportunities for student CMAA members. Shiring serves as a governor on the PCMF and has actively advocated for the Foundation in creating and offering both student scholarships to support students at IUP.

- Shiring has been invited by the corporate industry community to conduct employee training programs. He has presented at local, regional, national, and international educational associations. A presenter at the Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management annual conferences, he has shared his research interests with CHRIE members.
