In recent years, the development of counseling and educational programs for men arrested for domestic violence (i.e., batterer intervention programs) has faced much controversy over the most appropriate and effective program approach. This presentation will review the state of the field in terms of the diversifying program development and the victim-centered principles that underlie much of the field. It will also consider the program evaluations that have raised question about batterer programs in general and discuss findings from "systems research" that counter the "don't work" claims. The session also aims to increase awareness of evaluation issues and identify ways to respond to the demands for "evidence-based practice."
