Dr. Abigail Adams, an assistant professor of Anthropology at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (IUP), has joined MARTI as a research associate. Prior to IUP, she taught in the department of anthropology at the College of Wooster in Ohio. She received her doctoral degree in anthropology (with distinction) in 2009 from the University of New Mexico, in addition to her master's degree in anthropology and bachelor degrees in sociology and anthropology. Dr. Adams conducted her research for her dissertation titled, Choice Ideology and the Parameters of its Practice: Alternative Abortion Narratives in New Mexico in New Mexico and is continuing field research on Women of the West Mesa Murders in Albuquerque.
Dr. Adams' research interests and specializations include political conflict and human rights, medical anthropology, global health, public anthropology, identity politics, urbanization and transnationalism, borderlands, feminist anthropology, human sexuality, reproductive health and technologies, personhood in cross-cultural perspective, and ethics in scientific advancements.
As a professor in anthropology, Dr. Adams teaches courses in medical anthropology, anthropology of gender, anthropology of human rights, anthropology of food, cultural anthropology, contemporary anthropology, and Latin America. At MARTI, she will pursue research on environmental and community health. Her immediate plans are to develop a grant proposal for the Environmental Justice Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
