Biography
Matthew Baumer teaches the undergraduate music history survey, a history of popular music since 1945, and graduate courses in American music, nineteeth-century music, and twentieth/twenty-first-century music. He also teaches in the core curriculum of the Cook Honors College.From 2009 to 2013 he served as chair of the Pedagogy Study Group of the American Musicological Society. His interests include music history pedagogy; nineteenth-century program music, particularly the orchestral music of Franz Liszt; the representation of gender in instrumental music; and African American gospel music.
After graduating with a degree in choral music education from Drake University, he earned the MM in piano performance as well as the MA and PhD in musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the faculty at IUP, he taught music history at Middle Tennessee State University and was the managing editor of the Instrumentalist.
He has presented papers at national and regional meetings of the American Musicological Society, the Teaching Music History Conference, and at other conferences in the United States and England. Publications appear in the Journal of Music History Pedagogy, the Journal of the American Liszt Society, and the Kurt Weill Newsletter.
His performing interests include collaborative piano and singing in early music ensembles.
