The Academic Success Center offers a weekly Academic Tip every Friday in IUP Now. Below is a list of tips from last semester for reference. Check out IUP Now on Fridays for new tips this semester. Connect

If you haven't done so already, reach out to each of your instructors. Introduce yourself, and share one fun fact. It will help to establish a connection.

Time Management

Maintain a balanced schedule that includes class time, homework time, breaks to recharge, social time, exercise, and time to eat and refuel.

Getting Organized

Use a planner to organize your schedule. Look over each course syllabus carefully, and map out your assignments, discussions, projects, quizzes, and exams throughout the semester.

Make a list of things you need to get done. Set a goal or objective to target for the day or the week. What do you need to get done today? What do you need to get done this week? Write it down where you can quickly reference it.

Studying

Use a study guide. Try studying with a small group of classmates to prepare for your exams.

Eliminate distractions from your study sessions. And, don't procrastinate. Schedule out your study time for each course, and stick to that schedule.

Getting Ready for Mid-Terms and Finals

  • Study for 30 minutes at a time. Our brains effectively absorb information in the first and last 15 minutes.
  • Keep your study group small. A group of three to four is ideal. Discuss the material and quiz each other. Make a list of things you need to study more on your own.

Self-Care

Throughout the semester, make time for self-care. It means actively protecting your own well-being and happiness, particularly during times of stress. Taking breaks and caring for yourself help restore energy, produce positive feelings, and boost your confidence. Practicing self-care reminds you and others that your needs, too, are important.
