An ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø professor has been named as one of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” for 2023 by an international academic independent research center.
David I. Hanauer, a faculty member in IUP’s Department of English, was named in the list of top-2%-cited scientists in the field of education and linguistics compiled by Stanford University using Scopus data provided by the Elsevier Data Repository.
This recognition means that of all the citations of scientific research during the 2021–22 academic year, Hanauer was in the top two percent of most cited scientists who were included in research publications.
“Dr. Hanauer’s innovative work continues to have a powerful impact on both students and faculty all over the globe,” IUP Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research Hilliary Creely said. “His recognition as a top two percent scientist is well deserved and is a great honor for him and for IUP. In addition to his research, Dr. Hanauer is an excellent mentor for our students and is a dedicated advisor for students completing their doctoral studies,” she said.
An applied linguist by training who teaches research methodology in the English doctoral Composition and Applied Linguistics program, Hanauer has expertise in a wide range of psychological, writing, and linguistic methodologies which he employs to construct psychosocial measurement tools for educational research and assessment purposes.
Since coming to IUP more than 20 years ago, he has published nine peer-reviewed academic books, 69 peer reviewed research papers including in the journal Science, and 19 refereed book chapters. He has received close to $3 million in research funding from prestigious funding agencies in the United States, including the National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the US Department of Education.
Hanauer says that his life work has been dedicated to developing novel research methods that allow a wide range of students to have the opportunity to experience the joy of creating new knowledge through research, and he is proud that through his and his colleagues’ work in the SEA-PHAGES program, thousands of students across the United States every year have the opportunity to have a high-level research experience.
Beyond traditional science education, Hanauer has developed, studied, and used poetry as a research method to explore lived experience.
Hanauer has received numerous awards for his work, including IUP's New Investigator Award, Teaching Excellence Award, and Future Researcher Award. He has presented his work at both national and international conferences and has been a member of the American Association of Applied Linguistics, the Empirical Study of Literature, and the American Society of Microbiologists.
