Looking for the Light in Dark Times, an exhibition by Jonelle Summerfield and her mother Jolene Joyner, is on display through July 31 in the entry and main galleries at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South, Ligonier. Summerfield, a resident of Indiana, Indiana County, received a degree in interior design from 窪蹋勛圖厙 in 2001.

Kamryn Giesler of Aliquippa was honored with the John J. and Char Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics best presentation award (undergraduate) for her project, Theory of Mind and Social Inferencing Within the Broad Autism Phenotype.

NDIANA, PA. 窪蹋勛圖厙 honored nine volunteers, including a Delaware County man, during the annual Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony event. Held virtually on April 21, the event honored both the 2020 and 2021 recipients of the Awards of Excellence in Volunteer Leadership, which are presented annually to alumni, or a friend of the university in recognition of their exemplary work on behalf of the university. Due to the pandemic, the event was not held in 2020. This event was part of the university's Celebration Week, which included the Celebration of Philanthropy on April 16 and the Distinguished Alumni Awards celebration on April 17. Christopher Ofalt, now of Philadelphia, was honored with the 2020 Regional Impact award, which recognizes a volunteer who champions IUP in their region by engaging alumni through events, supports recruitment efforts, or provides internship and employment opportunities.

Never in a million years did I believe I would be the recipient of something like this, she wrote on Facebook, adding: By the way, fun fact . . . Indiana, 窪蹋勛圖厙 is the birthplace of Jimmy Stewart, whom I once had the great privilege of meeting. Butler, a native of Pittsburgh, earned her bachelor's degree in broadcasting from 窪蹋勛圖厙 in 1985 and a meteorology certification from Mississippi State University in 2001. Since joining ABC 7 in 1994, she has become Chicago's longest-running female meteorologist.

Willett receives IUP alumni award
Johnstown native Linda Sidor Willett has been named a 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for her career achievements and service by 窪蹋勛圖厙. The 1969 science education graduate is the executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, which is the largest health insurance company in New Jersey. From stone mason to stone scholar, IUP senior, Fayette Co. native earns coveted Goldwater Scholarship
Susan Adams won't take offense if anyone refers to her as an accidental scientist. The 24-year-old native of Smock, a tiny Fayette County village near Uniontown, never imagined herself immersed in any kind of science, let alone geology. She graduated from Uniontown Area High School and the masonry class at the Fayette County CTI in 2015 and promptly entered the workforce, laying stone and building foundations. Yet, six years later, she is the recipient of a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, preparing for her final year of undergraduate work at 窪蹋勛圖厙. She is looking forward to graduate studies in marine geophysics at a top college on the West Coast, if all goes according to her plans.

Colleges prepare for a freshman class unlike any other after a pandemic year
Timothy Runge, a professor at 窪蹋勛圖厙's departments of education and psychology, said many colleges know they will have to make allowances for deficits among incoming freshman. What we know, historically, is that pre-covid kids in general (in grades K-8) would lose about 20% of what they've learned in the prior academic year. It's called summer slide. Now, there are groups at the higher and lower range in the elementary years, Runge said. When we're talking about high school kids matriculating into college, those numbers are not established, but we definitely expect some slide. It's reasonable to assume students will have lost a lot more this past academic year than ever before.

Lucia Cherciu of Poughkeepsie was appointed Dutchess County's poet laureate for 2021 by County Executive Marc Molinaro. Cherciu was born in Romania and came to the United States in 1995. S&T Bancorp. has appointed David Antolik as its interim CEO, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Antolik, 54, has been president of S&T and its retail arm, S&T Bank, and served as a director since January 2019. Antolik joined S&T in 1990, two years after graduating from 窪蹋勛圖厙. She had been hired at the university around the time dance was being switched from a physical education course to the College of Fine Arts under the theater program, and she was charged with being the director of a viable, ongoing performance company. In his quarterly report last week, 窪蹋勛圖厙 President Dr. Michael Driscoll touched upon a variety of topics, from spring enrollment and fund-raising to Black History Month and plans for face-to-face activity.Our fall-to-spring retention rate of 87.85 percent for full-time, first-year students is our highest since 2015, Driscoll said. And looking ahead, the number of applicants and admits for fall 2021 is keeping pace with fall 2020. He took note of the victory claimed in IUP's Imagine Unlimited fundraising campaign, which surpassed our goal of $75 million, and crossed the finish line six months early. Money raised from the campaign will provide more scholarships for students and give them a first-rate educational experience.
