The History of Safety Sciences at IUP
IUP’s expertise and experience in safety, health, and environmental applied sciences dates back to 1969, when the university was given a three-year grant to establish a baccalaureate program in safety management by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The program would prepare students to be safety professionals in industry, government, and institutional settings.
Fall 1971 saw the first safety management course becoming available for students. The same year, IUP become the first ABET-accredited safety sciences baccalaureate program in the state of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, and it is believed to be one of the first in the nation.
In 1983, the Commonwealth of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø designated IUP’s Safety Sciences Department as the official agency for OSHA consultation services in the state. The early 1980s also saw the creation of the Institute for Rural Health and Safety, providing public, safety-focused training opportunities to local and regional organizations.
This rich history enabled IUP to become the only institution in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø to offer degree programs in safety sciences at all three levels (undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral). To date, the bachelor’s degree program has graduated more than 3,000 students, creating an elaborate network of safety alumni and colleagues across the United States.
