Abstract

A concept that gained traction in the 1980s in Critical Race Studies, feminist intersectionality dramatically impacted scholarly studies around the planet. Recently, it has also become a buzzword for activists, employers, and people throughout US society. But its seeming omnipresence does not ensure consistent understanding of its history, applicability, or contemporary implications. In this presentation, the speaker will briefly review the history of intersectionality as a model for understanding oppression and identities, then focus on emerging ways that people are applying it to contemporary social justice initiatives.
