Greek Life in the Oak GroveWhen a student chooses to join a fraternity or sorority, they will join a chapter. Each chapter is governed by one council. At IUP there are three councils, each with a unique recruitment process. All recruitment is deferred, which means that students may participate in the recruitment process only when they meet the following criteria:

  • They are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students.
  • They earn and maintain a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade-point average. Some chapters may follow a higher cumulative grade-point average requirement.
  • They have successfully earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at IUP or transferred to IUP with a minimum of 12 credit hours from another college or university. Credits accumulated during high school do not count toward this minimum.

Interfraternity Council Recruitment

Interfraternity Council (IFC) recruitment is open to students meeting the deferred recruitment criteria. First-year students are eligible to join in the spring semester of their first year. That means you’ll have a chance to find your academic and social niche before deciding whether or not you want to join a fraternity. When you’re ready to pursue membership in a fraternity, be sure to review the IFC Fraternity Recruitment process and guidelines.

Fraternity recruitment occurs both semesters, during the fall semester for returning and transfer students and in the spring semester all students, first opportunity for first-year students to join. The IFC recruitment process consists of Recruitment Registration, Orientation, Meet the Chapters or Open Recruitment , Invitational or Closed Recruitment, and Bid Day.

Eligible students interested in fall fraternity recruitment are encouraged to watch Crimson Connect and social media for interest and recruitment events. Students may also express interest via email to go-greek@iup.edu.

Panhellenic Association Recruitment

The Panhellenic Association (PHA) has a deferred recruitment process and new students are eligible to join in the spring semester of their first year. This allows you to explore and settle into the academic and social environment before making a commitment to join a specific organization. When you’re ready to pursue membership in a sorority, be sure to review the Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment process and guidelines.

Sorority recruitment occurs both semesters, during the fall semester for returning and transfer students and in the spring semester all students, first opportunity for first-year students to join. Fall Sorority Recruitment is informal and mostly chapter-based. Registration is required. Fall Recruitment Orientation is Tuesday, September 3 and a chance to meet all chapters during Open House on September 4 and 5. Chapters sponsored events will begin September 7. Some chapters continue to recruit throughout the fall to fill available membership spots.

PHA will coordinate or participate in fall events to meet first-year students. See you at IUP Day on September 6!
