How I Became Interested in Psychology
From a very early age, I loved math and had the career goal of becoming a mathematician. That goal changed when I was selected for a work-study program sponsored by the Prudential Insurance Company of America the summer between my junior and senior years in high school. I was given the opportunity to work in the afternoon and attend a local community college in the morning. I was given a list of courses to select and register from, and I knew that I did not wish to take a math course that would interfere with the sequence of math courses offered at my high school. I selected an Introduction to Psychology course. Why? I was raised in Los Angeles and there was a lot of talk in the media about personal development. In addition, I knew I could transfer the course when I entered college. I was the youngest in the class by many years and I was painfully shy. I loved that course and all of the topics covered. Adios, math; hola, psychology. I thought I wanted a future in psychology, and I thought I wanted to pursue experimental psychology until I had that up close and personal experience with those enormous lab rats10 to be exact. That is when my interests changed to clinical psychology, and I've never regretted my decision.
