There are two main types of links in Cascade: internal links (linking to any page or asset on the iup.edu site), and external links. There are also anchor links and email links (see below).
Both internal and external links start the same way—by highlighting the text to be linked. (The link should always describe where the link leads. Do not use “click here” or place a bare URL.)
-
Open the page for editing.
-
In Cascade, click on SITE > IUP at the top left of the window. Then navigate to your site's folders and locate your web page. (Remember, the page's actual URL will match the folder location in Cascade.)
-
While viewing the page, click the Edit button at the top.
-
-
Scroll down and open the Content Row columns until you find the content to edit. (Clicking the Content Row/Column sections will expand/contract them.)
-
Select the text to be linked (always use descriptive text instead of a bare URL).
-
In the formatting toolbar, click on the chain-link icon (insert/edit link).
Internal Links
-
For Link Source, click on Choose File, Page, or Link.
-
Find and select the item to be linked. If you need to browse to a different section of the website, click the Browse link and then use the breadcrumb trail to help find the target.
-
Link to a File: If you need to link to a file, that file must be uploaded beforehand. You can choose Close on the current page you're editing, upload the file, and then come back to the page—your draft will still be there. (If you can't find it, look in the My Content > Drafts tab on your Cascade dashboard.)
- Link to an Event: If you are linking to an event, you'll need to click on Browse, then change the dropdown selection from IUP to Events.
-
-
Select OK at the bottom of the Insert Link window. Then navigate through the folders and locate the target. (Remember: the web browser URL will match the folder location. For example:
-
Page URL: /events/career/2023/02/iup-spring-career-fair.html
Cascade location: /events/career/2023/02/iup-spring-career-fair
-
External Links
-
For Link Source, type or paste the URL of the page you're linking to.
-
Select OK at the bottom of the Insert Link window.
Email Links
Cascade automatically activates email links when they are typed. They are also activated when you add a space after the email address or ending period, or by pressing Enter.
Do not hide an email link behind other text, such as someone's name.
- Correct: Email Professor Smith at prof-smith@iup.edu.
- Incorrect: Email Professor Smith.

Be careful when changing an existing email link!
Changing the email link text will not update the actual link.
To update the link:
-
Click once inside the email address link and then click the Insert/edit Link icon at the top of the content field.
-
In the Insert Link window, change both the Link Source field (which must begin with mailto:) and the Text to Display field. The Text to Display should only be the email address.
