This workshop will focus on the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a treatment for addiction and its development as an effective intervention in other areas of health care, counseling and education. Lecture and discussion will emphasize the principles and techniques of MI for establishing a therapeutic alliance. Participants will view in-session videos by the developers of MI and practice MI using role plays and exercises specifically designed by the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

- present the theory, principles, and techniques of the MI counseling model;
- discuss the operation of MI in establishing a therapeutic alliance;
- become familiar with the use of MI through role plays and practice exercises
