Stigma has wide-reaching, damaging effects upon those with substance use disorder (SUD) and those who associate with them. It is often cited as a barrier to treatment, but it can also isolate early users, contributing to the development of full-blown addiction, and prevent those in recovery from returning to normal living.
This presentation will briefly review the social science on stigma as it relates to SUD and examine local efforts to combat stigma, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Participants will leave with a better understanding of stigma, an appreciation for other's efforts to combat stigma, and practical suggestions for implementing an anti-stigma campaign in their own communities.
