IUP Plans Ribbon Cutting for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement Center

The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Friday, January 26, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the first floor Atrium of Elkin Hall. The Center allows IUP to respect contemporary students’ self-identification by offering one location on campus where students can access services to address multiple aspects of culture, identity, and the increasing diverse populations.

IUP Signs Formal Partnership Agreement with Milton Hershey School

ϳԹ and Milton Hershey School signed a Memorandum of Understanding on December 7. The agreement will provide MHS students with more tools and resources to set them up for success at IUP as well as individualized academic coaching to enhance the MHS student experience and graduation outcomes.

IUP Students Selected for Gilman, Freeman Asia Academic Study Abroad Scholarships

Ryan Caldwell, a dual Spanish and Spanish education major from Greensburg; Joseph Gallo, an Asian Studies major from East Stroudsburg; and Alexandra Roach, a Spanish major and Latin American Studies minor from Aliquippa, all received international Benjamin A. Gilman Study Abroad scholarships. In addition, Gallo received a Freeman-Asia international study abroad grant.

IUP December 2017 Commencement Ceremonies to be Held Saturday, December 16

ϳԹ’s graduate and undergraduate winter commencement ceremonies will take place Saturday, December 16. The ceremony for graduate students (receiving master’s and doctoral degrees) will be at 9:30 a.m. in the IUP Performing Arts Center’s Fisher Auditorium. The undergraduate ceremony will be at 1:00 p.m. in the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

IUP Offering Experts, Expertise to International Conference for Third Year

A team of experts from IUP is part of the 21st annual Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Conference and Exhibition sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago. The conference, “People, Systems, Sustainability,” is expected to draw more than 400 professionals from the business community, public sector, regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, and 40 corporate booths. It will be held November 14 and 15, 2017.

University Retiree Furgiuele Passes Away

Sam Furgiuele, a longtime and long-retired IUP faculty member and administrator, died November 1, 2017. He was to celebrate his 100th birthday on November 18.

IUP Students Design and Create Governor's Award for the Arts

When ϳԹ Governor Tom Wolf presents the 2017 Governor’s Awards for the Arts on October 26 in Lancaster, IUP will be part of all six presentations. Students in IUP’s Wood Center collaboratively designed and crafted the award objects, under the supervision of fall 2017 Windgate Artist-in-Residence John Hallett and center director and assistant professor of woodworking, BA Harrington.

Total IUP Fall Enrollment Shows Increase in New Student and Military-Affiliated Student Enrollment

The number of new freshmen at ϳԹ is up for fall 2017. There are a total of 2,481 new freshmen enrolled for the fall semester, an increase of 146 students, or a 6.3 percent difference, from fall 2016 new freshmen. Total fall headcount enrollment also includes 913 military-affiliated students, an increase of 94 students from 2016 enrollment.

IUP Homecoming 2017 Brings Past and Present Students and Families to Campus

ϳԹ’s annual Homecoming celebration October 7 and 8 is expected to draw thousands “home” to Indiana for alumni reunions and events for the entire community, including the annual parade and football game.

ϳԹ is ranked as one of the top universities in the nation in the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College 2017 Ranking. The ranking is based on four categories: resources, engagement, outcomes, and environment. Marcus Inducted Into Walk of Fame

Dr. Irwin Marcus, emeritus professor of history at IUP, was recently part of the first class of inductees to the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival Walk of Fame in downtown Indiana.

Professional Center at Penn Center East Renamed IUP Pittsburgh East

The Graduate and Professional Center at Penn Center East has been renamed IUP Pittsburgh East. IUP’s Council of Trustees approved the change during its quarterly meeting on September 7.

IUP Offers Memorial Program on Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

ϳԹ will present a program September 11 at 8:30 a.m. to reflect on and mark the 16th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. The program will be held next to the university’s September 11 memorial in the Oak Grove, between Sutton Hall and Stapleton Library.

Interim Vice President for University Advancement Selected

Khatmeh Osseiran-Hanna has been selected to serve as the interim vice president for University Advancement at ϳԹ. Osseiran-Hanna will begin work at IUP on September 11.

IUP Punxsutawney Offering Clinical Medical Assistant Training Program

Starting this fall, IUP Punxsutawney is offering training for persons wishing to become clinical medical assistants. The 18-month program is divided into six three-month sessions, five classes per session, with classes offered Monday through Thursday. The first class will begin on October 2, 2017.

Psychology Professor's Co-Authored Study on Fat Shaming Draws Overwhelming Media Response

A recent presentation to the American Psychological Association by Maureen McHugh, Distinguished University Professor and professor of Psychology, with a colleague from Connecticut College resulted in overwhelming media response.

IUP Selected for Princeton Review “Best 382 Colleges” Guidebook

ϳԹ has been selected for The Princeton Review’s “Best Colleges” guidebook for the 17th consecutive year. Editors based selection of universities for the guidebook on surveys and interviews with students. Schools in the guidebook are ranked in eight categories, including academics, admissions selectivity and financial aid.

IUP Ranked in “Money” Magazine's Best Colleges for Your Money

ϳԹ has been selected for “Money” magazine’s 2017 “Best College for Your Money” listing. Editors considered 27 factors in selecting universities for the rankings, centered around three measures: quality of education, including graduation rate and peer quality (academic preparation of students accepted by the university); affordability, including debt of graduates; and outcomes, which includes graduates’ earnings and socio-economic mobility index.

ϳԹ has been ranked as a “top ten” ϳԹ university by Schools.com. List editors considered factors that included in-state tuition and fees, estimated cost of books and supplies, debt load of graduates, and the number of degree and certificate programs offered.

IUP Adds New Major in Environmental Engineering and New PhD in Business

The ϳԹ State System of Higher Education approved today two new majors for ϳԹ: a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Business.

Consultant to Share Strategic System Review at Board of Governors Meeting

The quarterly meeting of the Board of Governors will begin at noon today, July 12, 2017. The consultant assisting with the Strategic System Review will share its recommendations after regular committee business is completed. The Board of Governors will then review the findings and determine next steps in the months ahead.

Closing In On the Mystery of the Dinosaur Graveyard IUP Geoscience Professor Co-Authors New Study About Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry

For the past six years, Jonathan Warnock, Department of Geoscience, has done research at the Cleveland-Lloyd dinosaur quarry in conjunction with colleague Joseph Peterson from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Scientists consider the area as having one of the densest concentrations of bones ever found, but do not completely understand why or how this group of carnivorous dinosaurs came together.

IUP Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute for Community and Behavioral Health Offering Conference on Opioid Epidemic and Suicide Prevention

The Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute for Community Behavioral Health (MARTI-CBH) Conference, “Promoting Recovery and Wellness: For Individuals, Families and Communities,” will be held July 10–14 at ϳԹ. This cross-disciplinary conference will provide an in-depth focus on the opioid epidemic and suicide prevention.

IUP Student Selected for Student Trustee Position

Caleb King, an applied mathematics and economics double major at ϳԹ in the Cook Honors College, has been appointed by ϳԹ Governor Tom Wolf to serve as the student trustee on the IUP Council of Trustees. He was sworn in to serve as a member of the Council of Trustees on May 29. He will serve in the role of student trustee until his graduation.

Project Welcome Mat to Welcome IUP Parents to Indiana County

The Welcome Mat project will bring families who are at IUP for new student orientation to downtown Indiana’s IRMC Park, located at North Seventh and Philadelphia streets, for a welcome reception with community members. In addition to an opportunity to meet members of the community, families will get tote bags with informational materials about Indiana County and will have a chance to visit informational tables set up in IRMC Park.

IUP Offering Two Free Cybersecurity Camps for Students and Teachers

After an initial and extremely successful Cybersecurity Camp for middle and high school students and teachers at ϳԹ in 2016, IUP is expanding the program to offer two free cybersecurity camps this summer at the university. The camps are part of a national initiative supported by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation.

Shellenbarger Selected for Distinguished University Professor Honor

Teresa Shellenbarger, professor in the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at ϳԹ, has been selected as IUP’s 2017–18 Distinguished University Professor.

IUP Commencements May 12, 13 to Feature Student Speakers, 4.0 Graduates, and IUP Class of 1967

ϳԹ will hold commencement ceremonies for 2,426 graduates at ceremonies May 12 and 13 at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Students graduating in both May and August are eligible to participate in the ceremonies.

Seedling Project and Hunger Awareness Week Provides Local Better Food Security

As part of Hunger Awareness Week, students from the Seedling Project and Department of Sociology collected nonperishable food items and toiletries and “stuffed the van” with 10 large boxes of donations for local Indiana County food pantries.

IUP Group Gets Funding to Help Reforest Flight 93 Memorial

Thanks to a recent grant from two organizations, a group from IUP is continuing to reforest and monitor the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County. The money will be used to pay three students who will work to monitor the plantings near the memorial crash site that have already been reforested.

IUP Classes Holding Fourth Annual Hunger Awareness Week Events

For the fourth year in a row, IUP faculty and students, working with a number of community agencies, will present Hunger Awareness Week events and the Seedling Project, April 24 to 28, 2017.

Close to 300 IUP Students to Take Part in Day of Service April 8

IUP Fraternity Plans Events for Third Annual Autism Awareness Week

ϳԹ’s national co-ed honor fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi, has planned several events for the third annual Autism Awareness Week at IUP, which is held as part of April’s National Autism Awareness Month campaign. This year, all funds raised during the week will benefit the Special Needs Activity Program at IUP. SNAP is a program for community children and adults with disabilities, offering them supervised physical activities.

Disability Awareness Resources Room to Open in Davis Hall

A group of students at ϳԹ has created a place where fellow classmates with disabilities can find assistance. The Disability Awareness Resources Room will open Monday, April 3, in 115A Davis Hall.

IUP Students Presenting Original Research During Research Appreciation Week 2017

Several events are open to the community, including the 12th annual Women in Mathematics, Science, and Technology program on April 3 on the first floor of Weyandt Hall; the 12th annual Undergraduate Scholars Forum (April 4), and the seventh annual Graduate Scholars Forum (April 5). Both forums are in the Hadley Union Building.

Papakie Selected for Love of Learning Award

Michele Papakie, chair and associate professor of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations, received a Love of Learning award worth $500 from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. She is one of 80 recipients nationwide to receive the award.

Holocaust Survivor To Speak at Six O'Clock Series Event

Holocaust survivor Judah Samet will speak on April 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the HUB Ohio Room. As a child, Samet was imprisoned for 10 months with his family in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Following his presentation, there will be a reception with Samet and other Holocaust survivors in the HUB Monongahela Room.

Annual Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Initiation to be held April 2

IUP’s chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi–the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines–will host its annual initiation of new members at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in Gorell Recital Hall, on the second floor of Sutton Hall.

IUP and Salus University Announce Articulation Agreement

The “3+4” Doctor of Audiology degree program articulation agreement will allow select undergraduate students who successfully complete the 90-semester hour pre-audiology curriculum at IUP to apply for the four-year program at Salus.

IUP Receives Funding for Green Dot Program, Volunteers Welcome

IUP has received $30,000 through ϳԹ Governor Tom Wolf’s “It’s On Us PA” campaign to address campus sexual assault. IUP is one of 36 colleges and universities in ϳԹ selected to receive funding, which will be used to implement strategies to address goals of the program.
