IUP Council of Trustees Approve No Increase in Student Fees for Next Academic Year

There will be no increases in eight fees required of undergraduate students at ϳԹ for the 2020–21 academic year, and no increase in costs for most room styles in university-owned residence halls.

IUP College of Health and Human Services Coordinates Food Drive, Partners with Local Business for Clothing Drive

A food drive competition coordinated by the College of Health and Human Services Service Committee resulted in a donation of 1,058 items for the IUP Food Pantry and Help Center. The center, free for students, is located in the Suites on Pratt and addresses the issues of food insecurity and insufficiency.

Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at IUP raised $4,000 for breast cancer education and support for survivors in October. The 36-member sorority sponsored or volunteered for 11 different fundraising and awareness events during the month at IUP and in the region. The sorority’s national philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness. 

IUP Presenting Discussion, Concert in Honor of Veterans Day

ϳԹ will host two events on November 11 in observance of Veterans Day, including a concert with a world premiere musical composition dedicated to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Events are free and open to the community.

Local Partnership With IUP Institute Pays Dividends for Students and Community Members

Citizens’ Ambulance Service, based in Indiana, has provided simulation equipment to ϳԹ’s Institute for Rural Health and Safety. Emergency medical technicians and paramedics who train for the professions at the institute are using the equipment, valued at $25,000, to help them prepare for real-life scenarios.

IUP Students Keep Ark of Learning, Summer Program, Sailing on Smooth Seas

Close to 30 students volunteered for the IUP Ark of Learning after-school tutoring program during the 2018–19 academic year and are continuing to work with the Salvation Army’s summer camp program. Educator Preparation Programs Recognized with Accreditation by National Organization

Educator preparation programs offered by IUP have received national accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Fewer than 240 universities in the nation hold CAEP accreditation for its teacher education programs, and IUP is the first institution in ϳԹ to receive CAEP accreditation.

Biology Students Present Their Research at National University of Honduras

Four students from IUP will be in Honduras in June as presenters at an international symposium on biodiversity in Honduras. The seminar is organized by their IUP faculty advisor, Josiah Townsend, and will focus on topics related to Townsend’s and the student’s research on biodiversity in Honduras.

Salus University and IUP have signed an articulation agreement to help qualified students complete studies to become a physician assistant.

IUP Selects Todd Garzarelli to Serve as Director of Athletics

Following a national search, Todd Garzarelli, who has more than 20 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics and higher education, has been selected to serve as IUP’s director of athletics.

IUP Student Selected for Fulbright Research Award, Language Enhancement Award

Daniel Wethli, a senior philosophy and Honors Asian Studies double major at IUP, has been selected for a Fulbright Research Grant for study and research in the Hubei Province of Wuhan, China, and a Critical Language Enhancement Award from the Fulbright Program.

IUP Celebrates Volunteers, Progress of Comprehensive Campaign

During its annual Celebration of Philanthropy on the evening of April 5, ϳԹ celebrated the volunteers and donors behind the ongoing success of its Imagine Unlimited comprehensive fundraising campaign. The event included the presentation of the university’s inaugural Award of Excellence in Volunteer Leadership to Tim and Deb Phillips Cejka.

Criminology Graduate Students to Train Local Families on Digital Safety

The IUP Criminology Graduate Student Organization will host more than 60 Indiana area parents and children for the first Digital Families Community Workshop on April 5. Sessions are designed to educate and engage families on topics that include digital wellness, security, access, equity, and literacy. 

IUP Offering Free Cybersecurity Camp for Middle and High School Students

Thanks to a fourth year of funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency, ϳԹ will offer a free, one-week GenCyber cybersecurity camp for middle and high school students.

IUP Six O'Clock Program Featuring Holocaust Survivors, Scholars

The Holocaust Remembrance Committee will present a program including four Holocaust survivors and three nationally known Holocaust scholars for the Six O’Clock Series on April 8, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., in the HUB Ohio Room.

Sinan Selected for Scholarship Established in Honor of IUP Graduate from Homer City

Mariah Sinan, a physics and pre-engineering major from Home, ϳԹ, received the 2019 Dr. Patricia Hilliard Robertson Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Female Science Student.

IUP Students Presenting Original Research During Research Appreciation Week 2019

More than 250 ϳԹ students at the undergraduate and graduate level will present original research, art, and music during the university’s annual Research Appreciation Week, April 1 to 5.

Branin 2019 Biden Courage Award Recipient

Adrianna Branin, a junior political science and religious studies double major at ϳԹ, is the recipient of a 2019 Biden Courage Award, celebrating student heroes who are working to stop sexual assault. Branin, of Philadelphia, was recognized for stopping a sexual assault by actively confronting six to eight men and physically removing the potential victim from the situation.

IUP Cuts Ribbon for Bill and Judy Scheeren Literacy Center

ϳԹ celebrated the Bill and Judy Scheeren Literacy Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 22. It was announced in March 2018 that the Scheerens, of Greensburg, committed $1.4 million in support of initiatives in the College of Education and Communications at IUP, which is home for the IUP Literacy Center.

Research Experiences for Summer Scholars Program: Application Deadline Extended

All members of the IUP community are asked to “spread the word” and actively encourage promising students to participate in the annual Research Experiences for Summer Scholars Program.

IUP Trustees Recognize Larry Sobotka for Support of Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center

IUP’s Council of Trustees approved the naming of the IUP Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center as the Larry F. Sobotka Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center. Sobotka, a 1963 education graduate of IUP, made a $150,000 gift in support of the Center. In addition, Mr. Sobotka has designated these funds to receive a portion of his estate through an irrevocable testamentary pledge valued at upwards of $1 million.

IUP Health Service Achieves Accreditation from National Association

IUP’s Health Service office is one of only 10 college health services in ϳԹ to achieve accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Accreditation is determined after an independent, external process of evaluation.

Internationally Known Organist to Present Benefit Concert

Organist Katelyn Emerson will be the guest performer for a March 3 concert benefitting the Carol Teti Memorial Scholarship. The program begins at 3:00 p.m. with a pre-concert talk in Cogswell Hall’s DiCicco Rehearsal Hall, room 121. The concert will follow at 4:00 p.m.

IUP to Host Parents of Timothy Piazza, Part of Anti-Hazing Coalition

Jim and Evelyn Piazza will be at the Performing Arts Center’s Fisher Auditorium on Feb.18 at 7:30 p.m. The Piazza's son, Timothy, was a sophomore at Penn State in 2017 when he died after a night of pledging a fraternity there. The Piazzas will speak to the community about the death of their son and their hope for change on college campuses.

IUP’s Center for Multicultural Affairs and Student Success begins the celebration of Black History Month with “King’s Dream,” a multimedia program about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 31, in Fisher Auditorium. On February 4, “Josh Gibson’s Negro League Tour” will be presented in the HUB.

IUP Receives Second Year of “It's On Us PA” Funding

IUP has received a second $30,000 grant through Governor Tom Wolf’s “It’s On Us PA” initiative to combat campus sexual assault. This grant follows an initial $30,000 in funds received in 2016, used to launch the Green Dot bystander intervention program in 2017.

IUP Alumnus Named to International Literacy Association 30-Under-30 List

Daniel Reichard, a fifth-grade teacher at Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School in Stafford, Va., and 2012 elementary education-urban education concentration alumnus, has been selected as one of the nation’s literacy leaders named to the International Literacy Association’s 2019 “30 Under 30” list.

Curt Scheib, a 1977 graduate of IUP, has been selected to serve as dean of the College of Fine Arts at ϳԹ. Scheib will begin work at the university on July 1.
