IUP’s Musical Theatre track in the Bachelor of Arts Theatre program will continue and will be open for enrollment by new and continuing students for and beyond the 2021–22 academic year. Food Drive Exceeds Last Year's Donations

More than 1,200 items and almost $300 in gift cards for local grocery stores were donated for ϳԹ’s Food Pantry and Help Center through an Oct. 16 drive coordinated by IUP’s College of Health and Human Services Service Committee. Donations jumped 13% compared to last year’s drive.

IUP, IRMC Collaboration Continuing in Fight Against COVID-19 With New Testing Pilot Program

Since May 1, the IUP and Indiana Regional Medical Center collaboration to provide local and same-day COVID-19 testing at IRMC has resulted in 4,500 completed COVID-19 tests, three new staff at IRMC trained by Narayanaswamy Bharathan on the testing process, and a new testing procedure being piloted by Bharathan that significantly reduces testing time and costs, while maintaining testing accuracy.

The IUP Council of Trustees approved a naming resolution on Thursday in honor of Bonnie Harbison Anderson, a 1980 graduate and 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, and her husband, Steve Anderson, by naming the Anderson Rotunda in Kopchick Hall. It will also be named in memory of Bonnie’s parents, Edward J. and Donna M. Harbison, who were lifelong residents of Indiana.

Two IUP music education graduates—Joshua Hillard ’01 and his wife, Jamie Anna Hillard ’00—have made a gift to create the John and Delores Hillard Scholarship for Diversity in Fine Arts. An additional personal gift from the Hillards has allowed the scholarship to be awarded in 2020 to Nia Golden, a theater major from Lansdale.

An experience for every certified K-12 teacher in ϳԹ is the student teaching semester. It’s the time when coursework ends and in-the-classroom, hands-on teaching begins. Their cooperating teacher gives assignments and mentors IUP’s students as they learn the ins and outs of managing a classroom. As the pandemic took hold of almost every aspect of life, many student teachers were left wondering if they would get to do a student-teaching experience as ϳԹ’s governor closed all public and private schools. Food and Nutrition Faculty Member Teaches Online by Day, Combats the Pandemic by Night

Nicole Dann-Payne, Department of Food and Nutrition, has spent the past four weeks helping the staff at Indiana Regional Medical Center. She has been screening people who come there seeking treatment, looking for signs and symptoms showing they could have the coronavirus. She has also spent time going to larger companies in the county and screening workers there, hoping to cut off any spreading of the virus.

IUP Transitioning to All Online Course Delivery Starting March 23

IUP will suspend all face-to-face classroom instruction for the remainder of the semester and transition to offering all instruction online. Online courses scheduled to begin today, March 16, will resume as planned and will continue as scheduled. All remaining classes will transition to online delivery and should start on March 23.

No In-Person Instruction at IUP through March 29

IUP to Postpone Face-to-Face Classes and Return to Campus Due to Coronavirus Concerns

IUP will hold no face-to-face classes until Monday, March 23. Students should not to return to campus or return to the residence halls until March 21 or 22. Those classes already delivered online will resume as scheduled on Monday, March 16.

IUP Showed Me Opportunities: Lamont Craven ’11

Before he came to IUP, Lamont Craven ’11 was unsure about what he wanted to do after he left IUP. But as a natural science major, he met some faculty members who helped show him what opportunities he would have by earning his bachelor’s degree. They also provided him a network of people who wanted to see him succeed, and after graduating, he landed a full-time job at the Carnegie Science Center, in Pittsburgh.

Update to Students About the Coronavirus

IUP does not have any reported or confirmed cases of the virus at this time. The university’s Health Service is monitoring the emerging facts about the disease and working with the Indiana County Department of Health and the ϳԹ Department of Health to understand and enact best practices for screening and treating any student that may report symptoms.

Four Questions with Cuong Diep

Cuong Diep’s research on the zebrafish’s ability to regenerate kidneys has been published in several journal articles. Diep took a few minutes to talk about how his work might solve a growing worldwide problem for humans and how he puts students in the IUP Department of Biology on the case.

Senior Biospheric Scientist Dr. Compton James Tucker will present a program at IUP on February 6 illustrating the use of satellite technologies in understanding climate change from the late 1970s to now. The program is free and open to the community.

IUP Receives Funding from Wolf Administration for Opioid Prevention

On January 8, Governor Tom Wolf announced that the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs is awarding nearly $1 million in federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grants, including $100,000 to IUP, to prevent and reduce the use of opioids by college students and to create naloxone training opportunities for post-secondary institutions.

From IUP to NSF, Hovan Begins a New Chapter

Distinguished University Professor Steve Hovan begins a new chapter this week in the field of geology. While he will be missed in Indiana, he will continue his work for the research community at the National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia. Hovan begins his new position Jan. 6 and hopes to use the experience to help IUP faculty bring more grants to the university.
